EUROPE?S PALM GROVE - Tradition says that it was the Phoenicians who brought the palm to these lands, and the beauty of the palm grove increased during the Muslim period. The Elche palm grove was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2000. Since the times of King Jaime I detailed restrictions have protected the only palm grove of its size in Europe, and the most northerly on the Mediterranean, from degradation. The city is divided by the River Vinalopó, site of ?Projecte Víbora?, a world record mural that measures 1.2kms. by 6.8 metres which runs along the river bed and features work by artists from around the world.
VISITS - The tourist train runs from the Municipal Park and lets you see the most important sites, alternatively you can see them on foot: Town Hall, Basílica de Santa María, Palacio de Altamira and Municipal Archaeological Museum, La Calahorra, Huerto del Cura, Municipal Park, Children?s Traffic Park. On the outskirts (the road to Dolores), you can visit the La Alcudia archaeological dig site and see what life was like during the Neolithic period, the Iberian culture or the model of a Roman city house. Or even dare to fly over the 17,000,000m2 of scenery in Hondo lake, a rich ecosystem with varied flora and fauna, especially water birds. One of Elche?s typical dishes is crusted rice.
