Surroundings - Tourist routes - Torrevieja

Torrevieja has, over the last few years, become one of the most important tourist centres on the Mediterranean. There was a huge amount of construction during the 80s, so much so that records were broken as far as tourist buildings are concerned, all this before the construction industry in the southern part of Alicante also felt the effects of the recession. However, the town council has not stopped promoting the area with interesting initiatives, such as the creation of the ?Sal Gorda? leisure city.

PLACES OF INTEREST - The salt flats in Torrevieja are, these days, the most important in Europe, huge amounts of salt have left the harbour to be exported all over the world. Also worth a visit are the watchtowers of Cap Cerver, la Mata and El Moro, a defensive monolith against pirates. You should also visit the Casino, built at the start of the 20th century and the ?Tomás Valcárcel? Holy Week museum.

SPORTS - The main sports offered in Torrevieja are water sports, given the town?s long coastline.

GASTRONOMY - Gastronomy is also important, the fish dishes being outstanding, whether grilled or as part of the many rice and soup dishes you can try in the city?s numerous restaurants, some of which are of a very high standard indeed.
